Interpretation equipment for your next conference
Interpretation equipment makes it possible for interpreters to render the message from one language into another as quickly as possible. At international conferences with multiple languages, it is essential that all attendees can understand what is being said.
International events that require multiple languages also require a wide range of equipment in order to be able to interpret between the languages and reach the target audience as quickly as possible.
There are different types of equipment. Interpreters will often be in a soundproof interpretation booth. The interpreters receive a live audio or video feed of the speaker and stage, and interpreter speaks into the microphone, and the signal is broadcasted from transmitters to wireless receivers.
The most common interpretation equipment is a radio frequency (RF) which is FM based and infrared (IR).
Different equipment advantages and disadvantages:
IR has the following benefits:
- Secure communications. It would be extremely important if there is confidential information.
- No radio interference from other sources (for example, wireless microphones)
- Superior audio quality
- No interference from lighting systems
- Up to 32 separate channels can be transmitted at the same time
Disadvantages of IR:
- Inability to transmute through solid objects (requires line of sight)
- Difficult to set up a position for optimal operation as well as sound distribution
- Indoor operation only
- Labor intensive
- Not portable
Advantages of RF radio transmitters:
- Easy to set up; flexibility in different environments
- Ability to transmit through objects (does not require line of sight)
- Can be used indoors or outdoors

FM has the following drawbacks:
Possibility of radio interference from outside sources – depends on the frequency
Limited simultaneous transmission in some countries
72 MHz can be transmitted up to six languages
216 MHz can transmit up to three languages
72 MHz broadcast range is up to 1500 feet (457.2m.)
216 MHz broadcast range is up to 3000 feet (914.4m.)
